In the latest episode of The Active Texan podcast we talk all about our recent trip to the Northeastern US. Here is a preview of some of what we chatted about. We spent a lot of our time being active and exploring beautiful part of New England. We also saw so many beautiful textures, colors, patterns, history all over the place. I also include a recap of some of my favorite summer purchases including my new cooling hat from Mission. I sure wish I had gotten it before our trip hiking Mount Monadnock.

B- We are talking about our most active adventure. We went up to Massechusetts and visited 4 states.
A- I have family in Cambridge, MA and there are a lot of things you can go do within 2 hours in various directions.
B- When we go on vacation we like to relax but we also like to do active relaxing. We go on vacation to recharge and relax but also what all can we do that will disconnect us from everything else.
A- Its one thing to lay around and relatx but traveling and exploring is a different kind of relaxation
B- Yes, we wanted to connect with our kids and show them a different part of the US and having family up there made it easier to have a hub and travel out from there.
B- We will go over what we did and give you some ideas for what you could find to do whereever you are going. So We are about 5 minutes from Harvard so you have a lot of local active people there.
A- A lot of people are running along the Charles River…
B – You know they have a pretty big race there in the area
A- Never heard of that {sarcastically}
B – Yes, we have interviewed a couple Boston marathoners on our podcast.

B- So we had 4 days to do something, we drove somewhere most days except for our last day.
A- The rain changed our hiking plans . we were going to hike in northern New Hampshire and Vermont but there was flooding that kept us from that area.
B- The first day we went to Ogunquit, ME to go to the beach
A- I think it is a pretty popular desitination for both tourists and locals.
B- Yeah, so this is on the coast of southern Maine. I taught the kids how to body surf for the first time.
A- That is crazy that we havent done that before.
B- I guess we just haven’t been to a beach that had good enough waves to do that. There were some good 3-4 foot waves and it was cool water and average temps.
We only like to spend so much time in the salt water. Then we went to have some food near the beach. I got some lobster rolls and the kids had burgers and chicken.
A- Its cheaper than buying lobster!
B- Then we went on a walk down the marginal way trail nearby that is 1.2 mile out and 1.2 miles abck and it is right along the coast and there are nice views and cliffs and there were a lot of people out walking.
A- The kids weren’t excited at first to just walk but quickly realized how nice it was and enjoyed the rocky coastal walk and then got ice cream. Food is important on vacation
A- We looked at some shops and this lady sitting by the street basically talked us into going to a restaurant that her and her husband own just off the main strip. You can’t see it and may not know its there so she just sits there with a menu recruiting people to go to the restaurant. The food was great and had nice views.
B- Is that where you had the salmon?
A- Yes, is was great! It was a beautiful day and we drove back home to hang with my parents and get some rest.
B- The next day was Rhode Island and fun fact, Allie is related to Roger Williams, the founder of Rhode Isalnd.
A- A lot of people have him as a distance ancestor but its pretty cool to be there and hear about the history
B- Your parents loves Rhode Island especially after dicovering your history. There are these famous mansions along the coast and we did a tour of the Breakers which is famous mansion owned by the Vanderbilts. Then we went on the Cliff Walk. It was a challenging walk in the sense that we are on the coast and there are cliffs and not just a paved path. It was very different than Ogunquit.
A- I loved that walk, it was awesome, so beautiful and varied.
B- The next day, I think was my most fun
A- It was the most anticipated. I enjoyed it by the time it was over. Under different circumstances I think I would have enjoyed it even more. When we realized we couldnt go to northern New Hampshire, we decided to go to Mount Monadnock, which is in southern NH and is one of the most hiked trails in the world!
B- According to Google
A-  According to a lot of things. it has historical and literary importance. It was mentioned by Ralph Waldo Emerson and Thoreau in their writings and it is a well known and unique geological hike because of the rock structures, the 360 views and false summits.
B- Definitely false summits
A- Those false summits made me angry
B- It is not a long hike it is just steep and it was wet from rain. Make sure you get a reservation for the parking lot
A- Which we did not
B- Yeah, we had to go to a different trail head and parking lot which added another 1.5 miles to our hike. It was draining mostly because of the humidity.
A- It was draining because of the humidity and the added time and it caused us to run out of water. I mean if we didn’t do that part our water would have been sufficient.
B- And we used more water because of the humidty and mosquitos
A- We did the Red Spot Trail. We were planning to do the White Dot and then go down the White Cross. White Dot is the most well known. The Red Spot was challenging.
B- Yeah it was a 5k going up, 3.1 miles
with about 1900 elevation gain and most of the gain is in the last mile. The first mile was mostly flat and it just kept getting steeper and we were getting to points where we are like “I don’t know if I want to go all the way to the top”
A- Yeah, I had a few points where I felt that way. My calves were burning and we would turn another corner and there would be another steep incline of rockiness.
B- You keep thinking you are almost done. It was rock scrambling. not rock climbing but like giant boulders broken both jagged and smooth and you have to scramble up it. My guess is White dot is more popular just because that part is shorter than the Red Dot maybe. For sure get a reservation for White Dot trailhead. Then take White cross down, it was great. We ran out of water at the top of the mountain though so going down was brutal.
A- Now also, before we made it to the top I did have a little struggle. I had a panic attack on this one part of the climb….
